Project Overview

The Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland-Association (BIMA) Array and Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) have been used with cm-wave receivers to conduct a survey of known clusters of galaxies through observations of the Sunyaev-Zel-dovich (SZ) effect. With observatoins of over 40 clusters of galaxies, a value for the Hubble constant has been derived that is consistent with other observations. Analysis has also constrained the value of the baryon density in the universe.

The BIMA instrument is based out of the Radio Astronomy Laboratory at U.C. Berkeley, the Laboratory for Astronomical Imaging at U. Illinois at Urbana, and Laboratory for Millimeter-Wave Astronomy at U. Maryland.

The OVRO instrument is based run by the Astronomy Dept. of California Institute of Technology.
