Welcome to the Berkeley APEX SZ Survey site. The APEX (Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment) telescope, funded by the Max Planck Institute for Radioastronomy (MPIfR), the European Southern Observatory, and the Swedish Onsala Space Observatory, is a 12 meter, on-axis Cassegrain telescope that is the prototype for the ALMA array, and will be located on the Atacama plateau in Chile. Here at Berkeley, in collaboration with MPIfR, we are contributing a millimeter-wave bolometric receiver. This receiver will discover and study galaxy clusters via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect with unprecedented sensitivity.
